Frequently asked questions

Have questions?

Below you'll find answers to the questions we get asked the most about using Stairs.

What fees do I pay Stairs?

There are no minimum contributions or balances to Stairs accounts. Our fee of 0.25% per year is at or below leading competitors, and significantly below traditional investment advisers. We charge account holders 0.25% per year on the balance of their accounts. We use this money to manage your account, work with the best partners and build new products to help you buy a home someday.

How does Stairs manage my risk?

The first factor we use to build your portfolio is your time horizon–when you are planning to buy a home. If you’re planning on buying a home far in the future, you can afford to take on more risk in order to earn higher expected returns. This means more of your portfolio will consist of equities funds–backed by stocks. Alternatively, if you’re buying a home in the next year or two, we want to protect your down payment, so more of your portfolio will consist of lower risk, lower expected return investments like fixed income funds. (Note: the market fluctuates--all investments have risks associated with them.)

Lastly, we ask what your overall risk tolerance is. As a person (or couple, if you’re planning with a partner), are you comfortable with risk? Or would you rather take less risky choices. This helps us build a portfolio that’s appropriate for you and your goals.

How does Stairs set my home goal?

Your home goal is a key factor in designing your investment portfolio. Specifically, the prices of the homes that fit your goal. Based on where you tell us you want to live, we leverage our database of home prices across the country to estimate how much you should invest in your portfolio. Your investment strategy is based on our projections of future prices, so that your home goal investment plan is updated for buying your house in the future.

How does Stairs select investments?

We have three priorities in selecting investments for your portfolio: partnering with best financial institutions, keeping fund fees low and getting you exposure to the right asset classes. We only select investments from world class investment companies like Vanguard and Fidelity for our users. We research each sponsor before we recommend a fund or investment, and we make sure they are of the highest quality. Next, we choose investments like exchange traded funds (ETFs) for low fees to minimize the cost of your investment. Finally, we source investments to ensure your portfolio is diversified, across asset classes and geographies to minimize risk and maximize returns.
